Mayor Newsom Welcomes Latest ChinaSF Recruit, GCL-POLY

03/10/10 – Mayor Gavin Newsom, together with Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting and Dennis Conaghan, Executive Director of the San Francisco Center for Economic Development announced that GCL-Poly Energy Holdings Limited (GCL-Poly) has selected San Francisco for its North American headquarters. A significant ChinaSF recruitment, GCL-Poly is one of the top Chinese green energy enterprises and a world-leading polysilicon and wafer supplier. The San Francisco office will start with 25 to 35 people, with plans to grow.

“GCL-Poly is a welcome addition to San Francisco’s cleantech community, and is an important win for ChinaSF,” said Mayor Newsom. “As a major energy company in China, GCL-Poly’s choice to locate in San Francisco affirms San Francisco’s premiere international status in the solar industry. San Francisco is quickly becoming the top choice for leading Chinese companies to locate their North American operations.”

From start to finish, ChinaSF was responsible for bringing GCL-Poly to San Francisco. ChinaSF identified GCL-Poly as a potential lead, built relationships with key GCL-Poly executives, and converted this opportunity into jobs and investment for San Francisco.

“The choice to locate our US headquarters in San Francisco was natural,” said Hunter Jiang, Executive President of GCL-Poly. “The City is known for its talented people, forward thinking and clean energy focus. By locating here, GCL has a distinct business advantage in this market.”

An important local and regional economic development initiative, ChinaSF recruits and supports inbound investment from China, while helping San Francisco companies locate opportunities in China.

“On behalf of ChinaSF, it is with great pride and a strong sense of accomplishment that we welcome the North American headquarters of GCL-Poly to San Francisco,” said Assessor-Recorder and ChinaSF Board Chair Phil Ting. “Today’s announcement represents another incredible achievement for ChinaSF in positioning San Francisco as the gateway between China and North America.”

“The City of San Francisco offers a great deal to global cleantech leaders,” said Dennis Conaghan. “This latest announcement is yet another affirmation of the benefits that San Francisco offers to businesses. We welcome GCL-Poly and are honored that they have joined our vibrant cleantech community.”
