Mayors Wager on Historic San Francisco Cable Car & Famed New York City Street
1/18/12–Mayor Edwin M. Lee and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today agreed to a friendly wager on the National Football League’s NFC Championship Game between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants this Sunday at Candlestick Park. Mayor Lee will be attending the game.
Mayors Lee and Bloomberg agreed on a bet. If the San Francisco 49ers win, Mayor Bloomberg will rename 49th Street in Manhattan as “49ers Street.” Mayor Bloomberg will also send a dozen New York bagels from Bagel Oasis in Queens to San Francisco.
If the New York Giants win, Mayor Lee will outfit a historic San Francisco Cable Car in blue and red with New York Giants flags for a day along the world class Powell Street route. Mayor Lee will also send Boudin sourdough bread to New York City. In wager discussions today, Mayor Lee also considered waging with Mayor Bloomberg to rename New York City as Jed York City for a day if the 49ers won, but settled on this bet.
“49ers fever is sweeping our City and the entire Bay Area region, and we are so proud of our hometown team,” said Mayor Lee. “So while I’m excited to make this bet with Mayor Bloomberg, we have no intention of losing. We’re going all the way to the Super Bowl. The Giants will have to leave their hearts and their Super Bowl hopes in San Francisco. Go Niners!”
“Just like Hakeem Nicks ran right past the Packers’ secondary, the Giants are going to breeze by the 49ers on their way to the Super Bowl,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “After Sunday, Niners fans will be left with a taste as sour as their famous bread and the Giants will have their sights set on another trophy.”
The NFC Championship Game between the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants at Candlestick Park Stadium kicks off on Sunday, January 22 at 3:30 p.m. PST.
In a show of civic pride and support for the hometown team, Mayor Lee will continue to light San Francisco City Hall and Coit Tower in 49ers Red and Gold.
